How we met…
A mutual friend introduced us in the summer of 2006, right before Jef went to flight school in Florida and I went overseas for grad school. Due to distance, our relationship took a while to mature into what it is today!

The challenges of a long-distance relationship:
Trust is a big one, certainly. But I would say just staying connected on a day-to-day basis. A lot of couples take for granted the little things, like being able to sit together on the couch and watch their favorite TV show. Luckily for us, technology made our relationship possible in a way it wouldn’t have been even just 10 years ago. We watched TV together over Skype, were able to call each other and text without breaking the bank, and send digital pictures of our daily activities to keep our connection alive. We definitely ended up just talking a lot, which helped us to learn a lot about each other and bring us closer together.

How we chose Edgewood…
Once we made the decision to get married at home, as we’re both from Reno, we knew immediately we wanted to get married at Lake Tahoe. It is so beautiful, how could we not take advantage? Once we saw Edgewood (all online of course, more long-distance decisions!) we loved it. The internet further helped us with additional pictures and reviews, and we knew it was the place for us! Plus, the first time Jef and I hung out, we were at Zephyr Cove, so there was a bit of sentimentality in the proximity of Edgewood.

The dress!
I got my dress at a bridal boutique in New York called Adrienne’s. It was the second dress I tried on and nothing afterwards compared!

The bridesmaids’ dresses:
From David’s Bridal; the color is lapis. My best friends are also all far away, so the great thing about David’s was that there was one where each of them lived. We didn’t have to be together to make it work!

My colors and flowers:
Purple is my favorite color, and Jef loves green – one of his main points of input into the wedding was that he wanted to wear a tux with tails, and a green vest. I incorporated his choice of green into my purple and ran with it. Lilies are my favorite flower, and they come in my favorite color, so that was an easy choice.

The bridal party:
Alina Buccella, my Maid of Honor – we met while studying abroad in college and were instant friends. Kara Stuart and I have been friends since we were about 11 years old. Jill Janson and I were work colleagues initially (she working in NY, me in Boston) but we bonded quickly. After I transferred from the job, she and I continued our friendship and stayed close.

Superbowl Sunday:
We wanted an evening wedding, and Saturday evening on the 4th was taken at Edgewood, so Super Bowl Sunday it was! We were limited in date choices due to Jef’s military commitment. We’re both huge football fans (he a Chargers, me a Broncos fan, which yes, causes some conflict!), but lucky for us we didn’t have to worry about our teams that day. It could potentially make future anniversaries interesting, however! And we incorporated our wedding favors (koozies) into the fact that it was Super Bowl Sunday. Jef collects koozies, so now he has another one to add to his collection.

Memorable moment:
After the ceremony, when Nina was outside setting up the cameras, Jef and I snuck into a corridor to have a moment alone. We just looked at each other and let it sink in that we were married, that we got to spend our lives together, and we wouldn’t have to do long-distance for some time yet (until he goes on deployment again). It was a wonderful feeling, knowing that the next airport we went to we would be leaving together, and not saying a tearful goodbye!

Something to add…
We had a short engagement, only about 10 weeks, and while it was stressful for those 10 weeks, it is possible to plan, and definitely worth it! I would recommend it to other brides.

Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe Elopement

Donna had a unique vision for her and Brandon’s elopement – she wanted it 50′s themed, with a short dress, big hair piece with birdcage veil, and sassy shoes – not to forget that Brandon brought a hat, which I had really hoped for! :) The weather was a bit drizzly and chilly that day, but luckily no rain. The ceremony took place at Emerald Bay, after which we went to Camp Richardson for some more portraits.
Donna’s necklace is from her grandmother, and the large diamonds on both his and her rings are also pieces from family jewelry – I love when the gems are handed down from generation to generation, it makes the rings so much more meaningful.

They’ve been together since high school and are absolutely adorable and so in love!

How did you meet?
Michael and I met through a mutual friend. I was home for the weekend from College, met up with a friend at her house, and Michael was there hanging out; and as they say, the rest is history.

Why Tahoe for your wedding?
I have always wanted to get married in Tahoe, when I was younger my parents would take me and my family to Tahoe, and ever since then I have always wanted to get married there.

Loved the rich red color, and the guys’ shoes! Has red always been a favorite?
We chose red for two reasons: one is that red is actually Michael’s favorite color, and two, every time Michael sent me flowers, for holidays or just because, he always sent me red roses. So red was the obvious choice when it came to picking the colors for our wedding day.

Your bridal party members are…
Maid of Honor: Devon’s best friend since Kindergarten; Bridesmaids: Devon’s sisters; Flower Girl: Michael’s sister
Best Man: Michael’s best friend; Groomsmen: Devon’s Brothers; Ring Bearer: Michael’s Brother

Leis and kilts?
The kilts were very important to my grandfather who passed away a few years ago. He had a kilt and insisted on wearing it to important functions, so in honor of that my brother and father wore their kilts.

My father currently lives in Hawaii and we wanted to incorporate some of the Hawaiian traditions in our wedding for him.

So many details! Please tell us about

- the wedding crown
The crown is a Danish tradition that is really important in my step-father’s family. All of the women who get married have the crown incorporated in the wedding in some way; it is usually worn with a veil, but since I didn’t have a veil, we used it to hold the rings on the pillow. I really wanted to have this crown in the wedding because of how important it was to my stepfather and for all of the Danish relatives who couldn’t make it to the wedding. I loved being a part of his family’s tradition. It really was truly an honor to have the crown in the wedding.

- the bow on your dress during the ceremony
The bow that was on my dress is from my great-grandmother’s wedding shoes. It was also on my grandma’s dress and my mother’s dress when they got married. It was my something old plus a small little family tradition of having the bow be a part of everyone’s special day.

- the family bible
The family bible we signed has been in my family since the very late 1800’s and early 1900s. The bible holds every record of life, death, marriage and high achievements of literally everyone in my family! Since this is such a long standing tradition we absolutely wanted to have this be a part in our wedding.

- the sash and brooch
The sash and brooch go along with the kilts worn by my father and brother, and their meaning to my grandfather. It was a tradition that was important to him, and since he is no longer with us, we wanted to honor him by doing the receiving of the sash and brooch.

- the custom miniature coffee packs
My father owns a coffee farm and has his own coffee business in Hawaii. We wanted to have these adorable bags of amazing coffee as a substitute for the candy bar since not everyone wants to or can eat candy.

- your dress
I found my dress in a cute little boutique in Olympia, Washington, near where Michael and I live. I went to this place and tried on a few dresses and I just wasn’t in love with any of them; then I stumbled upon this one, and I just knew that it was the perfect dress! It was everything I was looking for in a dress, and I just had to have it and everyone agreed. It was the perfect dress for my perfect day.

Memorable moment:
I think the most memorable moment of my wedding was walking into the reception for the first time as husband and wife. It was just the most amazing feeling walking in holding my husband’s hand, with everyone smiling and clapping. Plus, seeing all the planning that we had done come together in this amazingly beautiful room, filled with our family and friends, was truly a great feeling, one I’ll never forget.
